Blocked drains are not only disgusting but they can also allow bacteria and other harmful microorganisms to thrive in your sinks and tubs. Drain blockage can build up over time, especially if you are not careful about what goes into your drain. The following are some of the things you should consider when dealing with drains and getting rid of dirty water.
Monitor the drains
It is very important to monitor your drains regularly. Since the blockage builds up over time, you can curb the process early enough before any serious damage is done to your pipes. It is also costly to hire a plumber to clear blockages that you would have taken care of much earlier. Watch out for signs such as water draining slower than normal or drains producing gurgling sounds when draining water.
Dispose waste correctly
Scrape off the food particles from the plates and bowls into the dustbin before washing in the sink or loading the dishwasher when cleaning dishes. These food particles may cause blockage in your kitchen drains. Avoid flushing away items such as wipes, nappies or cotton wool into toilet drainage because they can also cause blockage. You can use a drain trap in your bathtub to catch strands of hair.
Clean your drains
You can clean drains regularly using drain cleaning solutions, vinegar, lemons or hot water. Doing this simply helps to dislodge any grease or build up that may be forming inside your drain. It also helps to eliminate germs and dirt that can cause infections or health problems.
Unblocking your drains
If the drain is already blocked, do not try to flush away the blockage using more water because it makes the problem worse. Wear protective clothing especially gloves and safety-goggles and get a drain rod to help you clear the blockage. Get a small bucket of water and use it to rinse the drain pieces as you open the drainpipes.
Arrange the pieces in the order of removal so your work is easier when putting the drain back together. This is very important especially when working under the sink since there many small parts involved. Use the drain rod to clear the blockage by twisting and tiring at the point of obstruction until it is cleared. You can check using a jug of water whether the pipe is clear. If it is clear, flush away any remaining debris using a lot of water.
